Iodine – are you getting enough?
Iodine deficiency is a widespread problem with potentially serious consequences. An inadequate intake of iodine can lead to depression, mental retardation, developmental delays, goitre, abnormal weight gain, decreased fertility, still birth and fatigue.

In a recent report, the European EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies also confirmed a direct correlation between the dietary intake of iodine and normal thyroid function, normal production of thyroid hormones, normal energy-yielding metabolism and maintenance of normal skin.Iodine is an essential trace element found most commonly in dairy products, seaweed and fish. Remarkably, more than 2 billion people worldwide are estimated to be at risk.

Even more remarkable is the fact that many of those prone to iodine deficiency are in developed nations where the dietary intake of trace elements is usually assumed to be sufficient. In recent years several developed countries have regulated that iodized salt be included as an essential ingredient in bread and other basic food stuffs. As consumers in these nations increasingly turn to liquid formulations to supplement their dietary intake, fucoidan is being endorsed as one of the most convenient – and most viable – sources of iodine.
